Saudi execution causes outrage

The beheading of a respected Shia cleric has caused international criticism, from human rights groups to heads of state. The Saudi embassy in Tehran was attacked and parts of it burned. The event was downplayed on Iranian news, perhaps because it was not authorized by the state. Iranian leader Khameini says that Saudi Arabia faces “divine retribution.” Maybe, but there’s more concern over Shia retribution. Demonstrations erupted in the Kingdom’s Eastern Province, which is heavily Shia.

Syrian troops press into southern province

Its northern offensive stymied, Syria is now fighting to the south of Damascus. It is approaching the Golan Heights which is now part of Israel. The move will lead to increased Israeli air support for rebel groups as the Shia and their Iranian backers are the primary concern.

Fighting continues on Indian airbase

A small number of guerrillas continue to fight inside a Punjab airbase. The guerrillas were likely trained and sent by the Pakistani army as a way to sour peace talks between the two countries. The generals have used such groups in the past for the same purpose. Such attacks in India-admistered Kashmir have taken place over the years. Likely groups responsible for this attack are Lashkar-i-Taiba and Jaish-i-Muhammad.
