Turkey claims a second Russian air intrusion
Turkey summoned the Russian ambassador and upbraided him for another incursion into Turkish airspace. A few months ago, Turkey shot down a Russian jet that cross the border, although the plane was probably back in Syrian airspace when the missile struck. Since then, Russia has begun placing a sophisticated air defense system in Syria which will give it the ability to strike inside Turkey.
Shia mosque in Damascus bombed
In yesterday’s column, mention was made of the Sayyida Zainab mosque. Today it was struck by 3 powerful blasts that killed 45 and wounded 40. The bombing will heighten sectarian animosities and endanger the already frail peace talks. It may lead to more Iranian troops deployed to protect holy sites in Syria and Iraq. ISIL has claimed responsibility. Sectarian warfare helps break down states and open the way for ISIL rule.
