Turkey gets NATO political support for ISIL war
Turkey has begun airstrikes on ISIL positions in Syria. This comes in response to attacks inside Turkey that were probably done by ISIL. Turkey, however, is also bombing PKK positions in Kurdistan. This points out major differences between Turkey and the US. The US sees the Kurds, including the PKK, as its strongest ally in the region. The Turks see Syrian Kurds and Turkish Kurds as a threat to Turkey’s territorial integrity. In the words, the Kurds want to break away from Syria and Turkey to form their own country.
The US and most NATO allies prefer to see relatively secular forces win out in the Syrian civil war. Turkey supports militias aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood.
Turkish airstrikes on PKK Kurds will likely lead to PKK reprisals inside Turkey.
